Site Archive Now Up | Date 03/12/2002 | Time 10:30 pm Hello! Better late than never. Here is a permanent archive of the old Quake speedmap site. Thanks, as always, go to Aardappel for politely pushing me into doing this. The old site ran via some crappy CGI I wrote so I've had a fun job of saving it to html and fixing it all. I've done all the links, except the comments since they weren't very interesting :P, but all downloads and screenshots should be there. If any of those are broken then, drop me an email. Please note, the site is closed. There is nothing happening, so err.. don't email/contact me about it. Enjoy the maps. Extra Note : I've also uploaded SM38 and SM39. There are no screen shots or read me. Just the files for download. Temp Pack 38 (535 Kb) Temp Pack 39 (712 Kb) |

Hmm, what to do | Date 13/02/2002 | Time 7:06.57 pm Anyone out there? If there is here is the state of play, as far as I remember since it’s been nearly 4 months! 1. Speed chain map from xen (what is your nick atm?). 2. Another speed chain map from someone, tbh I'm not sure about this. 3. 3 missing normal speedmap packs. I have 38 and 39 but the other is lost in the ether. The Future? Well the site needs a little work on because the idea was to try to pass it onto someone else to run. Only snag is having the time to do it and a couple of technical problems, main one being uploading pack files. Plus we would need someone to run the sessions in #speedq1 since I'm not on irc anymore. |

Progress with sm36 | Date 04/10/2001 | Time 3:33.52 pm XeNoN posted a progress update on Qmap about the 3rd speed chain map. So here it is: I had been working on the original build since the session, but due to the layout being too flat and 2d (with connections between sections too obvious), and franky not enough sections to complete the layout, I decided to scrap it. After ages wondering what to do next (cancel it, give it to someone else, hold an sm36v2 to get more quality sections in etc...) I decided to take a break and look upon the problem from a different perspective. I ran sm28 and sm32 in quake, turning on noclip/notarget/godmode and flying outside the level spaces. Sm32 was particularly interesting... The main 2 sections where than's and nightbringer's. They were both pretty multilayered and were connected together on various floors through the usage of caves and rock canyons, using RPG's and gibbie's fairly linear sections merely to add interest to the routes between different floors. The result was excellent, as many pointed out on the news thread, so I decided how I could use a similar system with sm36. Firstly, I scrapped my one-floor linear end-arena lead-up section and went about rebuilding a new one, similar to that of nightbringers sm32 section: multilayered atrium with routes branching from each floor. Then I figured I'd need another multilayered section... of which I had none. Bah. But then, the elusive Vigil came to the rescue with his rather late section, and I figured I could use it well. Its only one room with 3 floors, but after bashing a few holes in walls, taking off the ceiling, retexturing etc. I managed to get it in a useful state. Then came ideas for the setting... I took in mind the rock usage in sm32, but figured that a huge slab of rock would look pretty out of place in yer average military installation, so..... i figured making the map into some kind of underground mining complex thingy would do the trick, and began taking out skies/ceilings from necros's and misyu's sections, replacing them with rocky shafts and ceilings. I did the same for mine and vigils sections, and the result should prove fairly interesting in terms of atmosphere/sense of place. But one thing's for sure I'm gonna spend quite a bit more time than I originally anticipated, in order to create an aesthetically pleasing layout and adding small extra areas to connect between floors etc. As for now, the final line up looks like it will include Myself, Vigil, Misyu, necros and Daz (...useful end arena). Apologies to Ray, cybear and apollo, but big thanks to you guys for participating anyway... especially Ray for coming up with the idea and providing textures. All for now... |

The results | Date 30/09/2001 | Time 4:26.44 pm Daz, XeNoN, NotoriousRay, Necros, Cybear, Apollo and Vigil took part last night in creating various sections which may end up in pack 36. XeNoN is currently in the process of welding the results together and then making it into a playable SP map. Unsure as to how long it will take since it can be a lengthy process. Stay tuned :). |

Idea! | Date 28/09/2001 | Time 5:09.30 pm NotoriousRay suggested it, so tomorrow (Saturday) @ 8pm GMT/3pm EST we'll be holding a session to create another Speed Chain Map Thingy (tm). The theme is idbase. Gamesnet servers, channel #speedq1. Theres also an optional texture wad which contains every idbase texture known to man as compiled by Ray. Download here (1,172 Kb). (No this post isn't copied straight onto Qmap ;) ). |

D'oh | Date 23/09/2001 | Time 7:44.45 am No speed maps from last night. Not enough peeps involved. However we're hoping to run a session tonight using Sock's newly converted Egypt texture set. It'll be DM. Starting at 9pm GMT/4pm EST. Gamesnet server, #speedq1. If you haven't got the textures you can get them from here or here. |

/me ponders an excuse | Date 19/09/2001 | Time 2:53.13 pm Does being a lazy ass count? No? Didn't think so. I've given the Speed Chain Map Packs (28 and 32) a final resting place here, as well as adding packs 33 and 34. Pack 28 was our first Speed Chain Map Pack started by DaMaul. The concept is fairly simple. Several people create a section for an SP map and then someone (in this case DaMaul) takes them in and stitches them together. Than continued the theme and did the same for Pack 32. As for the latest packs, pack 33 contains 3 DM maps in differing styles and pack 34 is 4 SP maps done using Stecki's Decon wad (538 Kb). Downloads here: Pack 28 Pack 32 Pack 33 Pack 34 |

Pack 31 | Date 18/08/2001 | Time 9:06.02 am Only a minor delay, what with the pack disappearing off the face of the earth for 3 days and my obligatory delay here is pack 31. 4 SP ID Base styled maps. Enjoy! Pack 31 Note: speedys map did actually run 20-ish minutes overtime but since its pretty cool I'll let it pass :). |

Holy f**k an update | Date 14/08/2001 | Time 4:07.57 pm 4 packs totaling 35 maps, at least half of which most of you will already have thanks to QExpo. Pack 26 Pack 27 Pack 29 Pack 30 Pack 26 was made for QExpo and was a double session of SP maps. A big thanks to both Lunaran and ELEK and others who I forget, for sorting out the sessions since I was busy elsewhere. Packs 27 and 29 are also SP. There is apparently a pack 28 which was run by DaMaul and was a speed chain map where by people all made maps and DaMaul joined them together. DaMaul's currently busy atm, but once hes back he'll gimme the map and I'll put it up here. Pack 30 is DM with a snow theme... not that you'd notice in some of the maps :). My favs are thans and Rays. Pack 31 is currently in progress (SP, ID Base theme) and should be up within the next day. Now I'm going to be make some changes to the site to allow other peeps to run the site so that I don't have to be around :) (my usual lack of interest has kicked in, so its best to hand things over to someone else). Its not exactly rocket science to do since MPQ allows someone to have full control over adding news/reviews, uploading piccys, etc. its just doing the work to make it do that :). |

Packs 23 and 24 | Date 15/07/2001 | Time 5:50.35 am Couple of packs this week. One from last night which was SP and had a theme of "Metal at Night". Pack 23 is 4 maps made by Jay Simpson. I'm a little suspicious of sm23_jay4 since it seems too good for a 100 mins map :). Also than joined us for the first time. Pack 24 Pack 23 Hanz got bored (I dunno, these kids on their summer holidays) and has done a second batch of speed runs for packs 9 and 10. Pack 9 Pack 10 |

Speedsruns + Best Of SP Pack | Date 26/06/2001 | Time 4:24.45 pm Hanz and Basil have teamed up and created the best speedruns so far of packs 20 and 21. All of the runs are really cool and worth watching, with my fav being the 6 second run of sm21_nane. Pack 20 Speed runs (296 Kb) Pack 21 Speed runs (364 Kb) XeNoN has compiled the best SP maps from packs 10 to 21. This weeks theme is... | Date 21/06/2001 | Time 3:50.57 pm Ok, I'm posting the theme for this weeks speed map earlier than usual because this one is a little different. Stubby from SDA (Speed Demo Archives) contacted me suggesting the idea and thats a bit of clue as to what the theme is… This week's theme (on Saturday, 8pm GMT) will be to create a Speed Runnable map. We're then going to hold a vote on it to see which is best and then the peeps at SDA will use it in an upcoming speed running contest. So to help, here are some pointers on making a speed running map. 1. Small, open map. 2. Has an exit! 3. Some of the following items. Weapons - GL, RL. Monsters - Shambler, Spawns. Objects - Windtunnels, Jump pads. 4. Low amounts of health/armour as to help the speed runner prefect his run. 5. Looks are not important. Neither is lighting or any other decorative item. The idea is to create an assault course. 6. Nothing that slows the player down. For example : stairs, lifts, water. Not that this can be designed for, but the exit time has to be less than 40 seconds. Also, since they seem fairly easy to make, in 100 minutes a couple of maps could be made per person :). * Note : 22/06/2001 - I've removed the demos and maps since SDA are using them in a contest and don't want anyone to get an advantage. |

New Site Design | Date 18/06/2001 | Time 4:40.26 pm I got bored so I redid the site design. All blame should be directed at Kable and excessus for any similarity to Qmap. |

Pack 21 | Date 17/06/2001 | Time 10:13.04 am Pack 21 is up. It contains 5 SP maps and was done with a theme suggested by Aard, which was "wood & stone, containing at least 1 bridge." Download here Note that Tron's map was done before the pack so doesn't fit with the theme. In order to spice things up we will now be running themes which will be announced when the session starts. And finally for those of you that are blind the screen shots link is at the top right. |

Pack 20 | Date 10/06/2001 | Time 8:03.33 am Pack 20 is now up. It includes 4 SP maps and 2 DM maps. FrikaC and Mystery8 join us for the first time, both of which made the DM maps in this pack. Download here Its a bit of an odd pack. Amrik's map is unplayable in normal GLQuake since most of the monster's disappear (check out the screenshots to see what I mean). TomazQuake just crashes on loading, so the only way I played it was using a modified version of PanQuake that can render a shitload more entities at once, which is how I took the screenie of it. Finally from now on we'll be running one mapping session a week on Saturdays at 8pm GMT. |

More speed runs | Date 09/06/2001 | Time 6:06.50 pm Hanz has done speedruns of packs 18 and 19. Pack 18 Pack 19 I've also got someone else called Basil doing runs as well. He has done a run of sm19_xenon which has then been re-cammed. sm19_xenon speed run I'll be updating tomorrow with tonights pack 20 which includes 6 maps. * Extra : I've uploaded a speed run of sm9_bear by Cybear. Forgot to mention it before. |

Proper Pack 19 and CGI based site | Date 04/06/2001 | Time 10:04.17 pm Finally up and running. Putting in all the old content was a pain in the ass and as you can see I've not done the links for the previous news items, but everything else is done and working (I hope). Heres a proper pack 19 : Download (1312 Kb). The only difference from the temp file yesterday is that there is a readme included. Now the site changes. I've not changed the layout but it'll be a piece of piss to do. The reason its taken so long is because I decided to write the CGI from scratch and do it in such a way that its fairly generic. This CGI will also run another site I've got in the works and probably be the basis for a redesign on MPQ. Theres now an index of Screen Shots and the usual Map Packs listing. You can create an account if you want, its just so it'll remember your name and email address. Anyway, the main thing is you can add comments, on anything. |

Pack 19 | Date 03/06/2001 | Time 9:59.23 pm Shorter than usual update because I'm currently finishing the new site cgi and wanna work on that more. Temp Pack 19 : Download (7 maps). SP Lunaran joined in for the first time and Blitz finally managed a proper map this time around :). We are also going to change when the sessions take place due to low turn outs recently. Once the new site is up people will be able to comment and we'll decide from there whats best. |

Pack 18 | Date 28/05/2001 | Time 9:58.52 pm Even though I wanted to get the new site stuff done first, two people who shall remain nameless (*cough* Apollo and XeNoN *cough*) bugged the fuck out of me so heres an update. 2 new packs of both types last weekend. Cybear's pack 17 map is well worth checking since its a bit surreal! Pack 17 : Download (4 maps) : Screenshots Apollo, Cybear, NotoriousRay and XeNoN, DM. Pack 18 : Download (5 maps) : Screenshots Cybear, Blitz, Miikka, Misyu and NaNe, SP. Hanz (he did the speedruns of the 100b2 maps) has done speedruns of all SP packs (excluding 18) some of which are fairly impressive. Hanz has also included details in each pack on the trick quality of each demo, so you get a fair indication of what they'll be like. Pack 9 : Download Pack 10 : Download Pack 15 : Download Pack 16 : Download I've almost finished a CGI orientated version of the site which should hopefully be up this week. |
